If I’m being honest, when I first saw advertisements for The Bold Type, I wasn’t particularly interested. Of course, I loved the idea of the show as someone personally interested in the big city communication company life, but I didn’t necessarily intend to watch it. That was until (four promoted Instagram posts later) I came across a comment essentially calling the show a crime against feminism, displaying radical cheesy behavior to give feminism a bad name. Others called feminism fragile because of yet another show coming out just to support the cause. The comments made me wonder, “What is the show really going to do for us?”
First off, media is not just entertainment, but a way to subconsciously assert cultural values. From childhood, we have always been influenced by what we see on TV, subtly encouraging us to feel a certain way about ourselves. Even though the show is marketed towards (and more appropriate for) young adult females, the reality is that very young girls will watch it anyway. Seeing empowered female role models from yet another source an early age will further enforce the positive attitudes we want in the next generation of women.
The show has much to offer its target audience as well. For those of us who grew up with Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars, The Bold Type is our next style icon TV show as many of us already are, or will soon be entering professional attire jobs (but don’t want to compromise style!). In the age of movies like Hidden Figures and Wonder Woman, this show is also sure to spark more conversations of entertainment and unity among our friends.
As far as its relationship with feminism, I actually feel opposite of the haters. When you watch the show, even though empowerment and strong women are prominent themes, it is far from “radical”. In fact, there are so many actions by the characters, big AND small (e.g. standing up for what you want in a relationship), that encourage equality. I feel that the show will help combat the idea that radical feminism is the only form. It will inspire people to realize its true definition and that equality shouldn’t be controversial.
The setting (New York City as well as a fashion magazine company) is my favorite part of the show. I’ve always loved reading fashion magazines but I’ve never labeled them as far as their feminist agenda. Many people have strong oppositions to them, writing them off as trivial in a world filled with tragic headline news. Others find them misogynistic as they constantly give tips on “how to please your man” and “summer workout routines”. As the show expressed, even through articles like these, today’s fashion magazines want to help you please yourself. The articles are there for you to choose advice from depending on your own interests. I believe the show will be monumental in helping people realize that though some content has remained the same since the very creation of fashion magazines, their intent is noble. They are here to give “advice from an older sister that [girls] always wished [they] had.”
Cheesy or not, the show has awesome messages and I can’t wait to keep watching. It’s topical and exactly what today’s girls could use to be the women of tomorrow. I hope you guys check it out!
