Advice to Freshmen: Extracurriculars

When I was thinking of a topic for my post today, I realized I couldn’t get college off of my mind. It’s about time for me to start filling out applications and I’m realizing all of the things I wish I had done differently throughout my high school career. So, I figured I’d create an “advice to freshmen” series.

I want to start off with extracurricular activities. As I went through my freshman year yearbook the other day, I realized there are so many opportunities to get involved within your school from the beginning. Some clubs take a little more investigating to find out, but there’s basically a club for every interest out there.

Of course, we’re all constantly changing. Interests and fads are fleeting. However, I think one of the worst mistakes you can make in high school is not getting involved in anything at all. The most obvious reason is college, not that college is a be all end all. If this is an after high school track you’re thinking about though, college admissions officers won’t take too kindly to applications without activities.

More importantly, these clubs and organizations help you figure out what you’re into. Everyone joins a club or takes a class that makes them realize “hey, this really isn’t for me” and that’s fine but you won’t figure that out unless you go out there and participate. For example, it took me two different electives- yearbook (in middle school) and photography (last year)- to decide that the visual side of journalism wasn’t for me. My grades took a hit, but I don’t regret getting that experience. On the other hand, you may find something that you’re really into. Even if it’s not something you want to pursue professionally, you can make a great hobby out of it. Once you find something you enjoy, stick with it! It’ll not only show some consistency to colleges in the future, but it’ll make high school a much more enjoyable experience. In my opinion, the more things that you try, the better your idea of what you like and what you are good at will be.

Best of luck guys, Nia Shalise
