High school is a bunch of adolescents crammed together in a microcommunity, each trying to figure out their way. Sometimes you’ll find yourself with a friend or two having a bit of trouble in a darker, more negative place. They may look to you for advice or support. Personally, I can usually handle helping others without burdening myself with their situations but this isn’t always the case.
If you notice your friend having a rough time, by all means be compassionate: give words of encouragement, check on them, be a listening ear, even seek outside help if necessary. But if you notice their demeanor placing a weight on you, try to give yourself space from them sometimes. Take time away from them to regroup and remain upbeat. That internal stress and weight from negativity is just as much drama as getting involved with another person.
This doesn’t mean stop being their friend and looking out for them when they really need help. After all compassion is a great trait to have. Just remember that your mental health matters too. I feel like compassionate people often don’t know where to draw the line to maintain themselves, and can subsequently end up in worse places. Sometimes you just need a little time to recharge away from negativity. This isn’t disregarding them by any means. In order for us to be able to give positive thoughts and support to others, we need to be able to take care of ourselves first. You should always keep a clear and positive mindset to help you stay out of your own unpleasant exchanges.
