“A goal without a plan is just a wish.” –French writer, Antoine de Saint-Exupery
We are now well into the New Year of 2017: new opportunities, new looks, new year, new me right? For some it’s just another day of the year. But others find the New Year as a time to set resolutions or new goals for themselves.
New Year’s resolutions are by all means state-of-the-art clichés but they do serve the purpose of motivation to set goals for some. Quite honestly I condemn them for making a once-a-year event out of productivity but I do appreciate the extra nudge for some individuals to get up and put a little extra effort into their ambitions. In honor of this blog being my biggest cycle of ongoing goals and achievements, here is some advice on the importance and execution of goals:
- They make you feel accomplished
Planning is half of the battle! Making a list of things you will set out to improve or get done shows that you know exactly what you want and that you are in control of what gets done.
- They keep you organized
Listing out what you feel you can improve on makes progress sooooo much easier. You can refer to these goals as often as necessary to see what you should be doing to get where you want to go.
Do’s and Don’ts
- Don’t make your goals unreasonable. If you’re a cookie fanatic and make the resolution to stop eating cookies entirely effective immediately, you may feel overwhelmed and once you break the resolution, there’s less motivation to get back to it. Instead set goals easing yourself into the change: maybe go from one cookie a day to one a week. Or switch out chocolate chip for oatmeal raisin. I get that it may not be a fair trade though 🙂
- Do make your goals in increments. Setting a plan over a period of time with benchmark dates makes your goal much easier to reach because the progression is mapped out. You have a day-by-day play of where you should be to meet your goal and don’t have to stress too much about how to pick up if you fall behind.
- Do stick with your goals. I know once you fall behind, you lose momentum to reach a final product. Whether it be a good grade you’re studying for and miss a day of prep or a song you skipped a writing session on, you can always make up for lost time and achieve what you put your mind to. As Mandela once said, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
My template for setting goals:
I will: __State goal here____.
To reach this goal I will:
- At least three quantifiable actions
- Include deadlines
- Set deadlines in increments
Purpose: Why is this goal important to you? The meaning of the goal to you is the real motivation to stay on track so be sure you really understand why you want to reach this achievement.
