I originally meant to post this for Black History Month (which clearly has come and gone without any posts from me), but here it is for Women’s History Month instead. As streaming services have become more popular, I’ve seen so much more representation for black creators and actors, especially for black women in movies and TV shows. Since I watch an overwhelming amount of television, I felt that it was only fitting I shared my favorite movies and TV shows with black female leads.
grown-ish– I mentioned this on a list of highly anticipated shows, and may I just say, it does. not. disappoint. Yara Shahidi seamlessly enacts the dilemmas teens face today, all while looking flawless. Alongside a diverse group of friends, Zoey Johnson makes me feel a little less alone about being “grown-ish”.
How To Get Away With Murder– This is probably the third time I’ve brought up HTGAWM, but it’s essential to this list. Annalise Keating is an amazing, strong black woman in a position of power but with emotion, diversifying the black woman image portrayed in media. She is your worst nightmare and a mother figure all in one, and Viola Davis’s versatility brings so much to the table of representation.
The Incredible Jessica James– Jessica James, played by Jessica Williams, is a lovable playwright in New York. Her eccentric optimism and sassy confidence draws viewers in and makes them smile. Not to mention, Jessica Williams aka ½ of the genius behind the podcast 2 Dope Queens, has a larger-than-life personality that’s always fun to watch.
Hidden Figures– Before watching this movie, I had no idea women had been able to work at NASA in the 1960s, let alone black women. Seeing these women in such an important place of business is unexpected yet empowering. Featuring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae, Hidden Figures is timely and inspiring.
Being Mary Jane– The entire premise of this show surrounds Mary Jane Paul struggling to find a balance in her life. Although I’m nowhere near middle aged, there’s something comforting and relatable about watching Gabrielle Union (my actual fave!) build a promising career and maintain her social life while working towards self preservation.
Beyond the Lights– Aside from the fact that Gugu Mbatha-Raw is absolutely adorable, Beyond the Lights turns celebrity drama into something digestible as personal and heartfelt. This movie covers all the bases going from glitz and glamour back to basics and reminding everyone to stay true to themselves.
