With the new year comes new fun, new memories, and new media! Which is good, because I’m getting a little bored scrolling through the same Netflix and Hulu selection 24/7. Here are a couple of the shows, movies, and books I can’t wait to check out this year:
When Life Gives You Lululemons by Lauren Weisberger
Perhaps the most legendary movie for every fashionista/ writer/ journalist wannabe is The Devil Wears Prada. If you’re anything like me, you had almost forgotten it was a book first (which I just started reading a couple weeks ago). Now, Lauren Weisberger is adding a third novel to the series, this time focusing on Miranda Priestly’s other assistant, Emily. We all couldn’t help but sympathize for poor Emily, and I’d love to know how she ended up. I should get through the first two novels just in time for the release of When Life Gives You Lululemons on June 5th.
2Fish by Jhene Aiko
Although Jhene Aiko’s poetry compilation dropped December 19th, I have yet to get a copy as the book has quickly sold out across Amazon and Barnes and Nobles. Jhene is one of my absolute favorite singers and her lyrics are so emotionally candid. I’d love to see how her poetry has developed since she was my age.
grown-ish
My favorite part of the show black-ish on Freeform isn’t Anthony Anderson’s hilarious banter, or even the tasteful, current depiction of issues facing the black community (although I appreciate both dearly). Instead Yara Shahidi keeps me coming back for more. I was originally drawn to her character as a struggling natural hair wearer myself, always interested in the next hairstyle she would sport on the show. Of course, I relate most to her character Zoe on the show: the snarky, fashionable teenage girl geared up for college. I’ve never ceased to be amazed by Yara’s own characteristics and activist efforts.
The spinoff of black-ish, rightfully titled grown-ish, features Zoe taking the main stage as she heads off to college. The title is a friendly reminder to us teens that while we don’t know everything just yet, maybe we’re “grown-ish”. I’m beyond excited to watch Yara’s next endeavor January 3rd on Freeform.
The Post
Spielberg’s latest masterpiece The Post hits theaters January 12th and I can’t wait. The movie features Meryl Streep as the first female publisher of the Washington post. Between the depiction of a strong woman in power and the riveting plot detailing the history of journalism, The Post is a must-see this season.
