Affinity Magazine is an online magazine dedicated to “Social justice + politics + culture from the teen perspective”. They often address issues related to Arts + Culture, Politics, International, Race, Feminism, Real Life, and LGBT+. I discovered the magazine’s Twitter account following the James Charles “ebola in Africa” incident and was instantly looking forward to possibly working for them one day. After all, it would be a great opportunity for experience with the advantage of having published works from an early age.
However, they recently released a number of tweets following the 2017 Met Gala. One featured an image of Nicki Minaj and the Olsen twins, stating that “white people age like bananas”.
To be quite honest, when I first saw the tweet I was entirely floored by the lack of professionalism. I followed the tweet back to their page and saw that this comment was only the beginning of the mess. It may be true that as a generalization many white people tend to age quickly but to bring it up unprovoked and in such a foul manner as a supposed magazine was entirely unnecessary and rude.
As far as attacking the Olsen sisters, one point that many readers were quick to bring up was the Olsen twins’ medical history. Mary Kate has suffered from anorexia and a cocaine addiction and Ashley has Lyme disease. In addition, they were childhood stars and a number of childhood stars are known to have difficult times adjusting following the spotlight. After all, celebrities are people too.
As mentioned, Affinity Magazine often addresses race and feminism. They have made some solid points in articles past but the use of this picture entirely refutes what one would think they stand for. The picture managed to pit races as well as women against each other. Black beauty is prominent and powerful but the fact that they felt they should belittle white people, or other women, to highlight it in this image was wrong.
When the magazine did release an apology, it was brief calling the initial tweet “in poor taste and the humor was tacky”. And even then the tweet wasn’t deleted until a number of readers commented requesting the magazine to delete it.
Although I do agree with some of the statements they have made about issues including race, ultimately, I’m not impressed with how Affinity Magazine pushes their social agendas as a “professional” organization.
