As many of you have seen, Shea Moisture just released a commercial leaving the natural hair community in an uproar.
The natural hair community has historically supported Shea Moisture and its products and was absolutely astounded by the lack of diversity in the ad. Shea Moisture has been noted for its inclusion, so the idea that it has expanded to include type 1 and 2 hair isn’t necessarily the issue. The idea that we don’t necessarily relate to the hair journey the girls featured in the video feel inclined to doesn’t entitle us to belittle how they feel. We instead felt excluded by the fact the commercial didn’t depict type 4 hair, the most bashed kind of hair, at all, especially after theming the video “hair hate”.

The company was quick to issue an apology, stressing that they “really f-ed up”.
We’ve all seen there commercials in past, defying the idea of normal hair and encouraging perceptions of self beauty. I felt that the apology did feature an evasive explanation of why the commercial was released so I’m not sure where to go from here. Regardless, I, like most people, will finish the rest of my hair mask before discarding the container.
What about the commercial do you all feel strongest about? Will you be returning to Shea Moisture or taking your business elsewhere? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
