If you are a Netflix frequenter (or are ever even in the vicinity of young adults) then you’ve probably heard of Thirteen Reasons Why. For those of you who aren’t familiar, a girl, Hannah Baker, commits suicide and leaves behind tapes to each of the people she feels are the reason why she killed herself. However, if you intend to watch it let me insert my SPOILER ALERT here.
I personally feel that so many more factors went into Hannah’s death than the cut-and-dried thirteen people mentioned on the tapes. There were so many other circumstances that went into Hannah’s downward spiral including probable mental health issues. Many viewers found fault in the fact that mental health wasn’t addressed in the series while others were just happy that it brought attention to teen suicides which are in no shortage.
All criticisms of the show aside, I feel that it did an even better job of reminding us to think of how our actions affect other people. Obviously everything has a cause and effect but here it goes much deeper than that. Each of the people on the tapes had individual encounters with Hannah, some more brief than others, and somehow these encounters pieced into her death. We never really know how even seemingly small instances of interaction will affect another person. Not to defend any of the characters’ actions specifically, the majority of the kids on the tapes were not inherently bad people. None of them could’ve predicted the outcome of their actions and majority of them didn’t have the intent to be cruel. After Hannah’s death transpired, they realized the graveness of their mistakes and sometimes all it takes is one mistake to really negatively effect someone else’s life.
The “awareness of your actions” theme isn’t just present in Hannah’s tapes. As memory serves, Sheri killed two people the night of Jessica’s party. I’m actually glad the show went the way it did in that moment because I would’ve even thought of the repercussions of knocking down a stop sign. Sheri, however, seemed to understand the possibilities as she argued with Hannah but dismissed them because she didn’t want to get in trouble. People just act absent-mindedly and with their own selfish interests at heart. Maybe most of us haven’t done something as serious as contribute to the death of Jeff Atkins or Hannah Baker but the show really visualized how serious the results of our actions can be.
While the show is focused on other important issues, I felt that this was an important underlying theme.
