Welcome to the second part of my spring cleaning tutorial. This will focus on smaller areas to tidy up.
Makeup
As I don’t use a ton of makeup regularly, my makeup tends to span several containers and not be very organized. There are several steps I took to fix this hot mess. I selected a single bag to host my almost-everyday makeup which would live in my bathroom: eyeliner, eyebrow pencil, highlighter, a neutral palette, etc. I now use a cute upright bin only for my brushes and beauty blender. The rest are categorized into a small drawer set on my dresser.
Speaking of brushes, a really good habit to get into is cleaning them once a week. I use the Mary Kay brush cleaner and lay them out to dry. This ensures that I’m not putting any accumulated bacteria and particles in the brushes back on my face. Another makeup safety tip is using this tidy time to discard expired makeup. Makeup expires??? Yes, it totally does. Most makeup products identify the life span once you open it on a label on the back or bottom. Again, avoiding bacteria (especially in eye makeup like eyeliner or mascara) is crucial.
Books/ School Supplies
My school has a block schedule meaning I have half of my classes on one day and half on the next. I purchased this small basic bin at Ikea to hold my folders on days I don’t attend specific classes. Over time, I had acquired a number of papers and other objects creating clutter in the bin. I cleared out the bin and replaced the folders only with papers I still need until the end of the year. I definitely recommend picking up a bin like this if you have a block schedule. If not, it’s helpful to have a couple binders to house papers you no longer need in your backpack but still need for cumulative tests instead of having stray worksheets floating around your room.
When I was younger, I was an extremely avid reader. I collected a number of books throughout elementary school and now I have a ton of books that I’m no longer interested in reading. Similar to clothing, there are a number of options for discarding old books. In addition to Goodwill and other charities, public libraries also accept books to resell and fund their programs. There are also a number of used bookstores that are willing to purchase them from you. This can be a lucrative way of making more space.
Technology
Technically this isn’t part of your room, but your electronics are a very important extension of you. The first place I would start here is with your email. Especially as a teen or young adult, you are constantly receiving a ton of information to your email. If you’re like me, you definitely don’t check your messages as much as you should. Scholarship and internship opportunities can easily get by you just by ignoring your emails for a couple of weeks. While you have time, clear out old messages and star those that you’re interested in looking into. The less messages you have, the less intimidated you will be by checking your mail.
I can 99.9% guarantee that you don’t need all of the pictures you have on your phone. Pictures of the assignment from the board, rejected selfies, and old screenshots are all just taking up memory space on your phone. Can you imagine how awful it would be if you were recording a video and all of a sudden you ran out of space? Tragic. Some photos you may even want to move into KeepSafe away from the nosy eyes of all of your friends. Whether you delete or privatize them, dealing with excess photos is a must for your mini cleaning spree.
