Spring Cleaning pt. 1

As a student, spring is just about the busiest time of the year. Exams, projects, and essays may be totally pressing this season, sending a lot of priorities to a back burner, most prominently: your room. Messes tend to stress me out around my work space and I generally get a lot of my homework done in my room, so keeping it organized is kind of important. Whether you have an extra couple of hours on hand on a mental break from studying, or you may be on spring break like I am, now is the perfect time to clear up some extra clutter around your room. This isn’t a spotless shine, catalogue clean, but it will make your room a more pleasant and up to date space. As this will be a lengthier post, I’ve split it up into two parts.

The Floor

If you have absolutely no junk, clutter, or miscellaneous items on your floor, congrats: you’re an organizational genius! Now on to the rest of us. Most of the stuff on your floor is usually clothes that didn’t quite make it to the laundry bin. This is the most obvious step one. If you want to be able to get around your room without falling over, picking up those neglected articles of clothing and recycling old school flyers across your floor are a great start. Besides, it’ll be great to have that sweater you were pretty sure you lost back in your wardrobe rotation.

Wardrobe: Keep or Toss

Perhaps the most tedious part of the process is going through your actual clothes and picking which you would like to keep or discard. Rule of thumb: Oprah says if you haven’t worn an item in six months, get rid of it. Or at least that’s what my grandmother said that Oprah said. This makes sense and I’m sure you could clear out a lot of clothing using this rule. On the bright side you’ll be able to replace it with stuff that won’t make you go, “I have nothing to wear!!”

When I actually have the extra time, I like to keep my closet sectioned into clothing types: dresses, shirts, shorts, and skirts. This may come as a surprise but some people have no kind of order in their closet. Categories make it so much easier to find quick outfits in the morning.

Wardrobe: Where to Discard

When it comes to discarding clothes, you have a few options. A lot of people give hand-me-downs to close relatives or friends. Others find it more suitable to donate to Goodwill or another charitable consignment organization. If you’re looking for a little extra cash, there are a couple places willing to buy juniors sized clothing depending on location. I haven’t gone recently, but in past I’ve sold to Plato’s Closet. They buy gently used brand name clothing sold in stores within the past 18 months. The only downside is that they tend to be very particular, but if they do accept the clothing you receive a decent couple of bucks. And they almost always accept jeans.

Wardrobe: Winter Storage

As winter weather is almost behind us, it’s best to take the opportunity to store away most heavy coats and long sleeves. I use a huge storage bin I found at Target to keep all of my extra winter clothes. Living in Florida, we don’t tend to see many cool days. About 90% of my clothing with long sleeves gets stored to make room for tank tops tucked away in a drawer to make their re-entrance on the rack. I also have a specific bin just for swimwear that I keep in the top of my closet year round. This tends to be suitable for warmer climates, keeping them out of the way but within reach for impromptu beach days.

With these tips, you should be able to clean up the main portions of your room and be well on the way to a more productive personal space.

PS: Please excuse the lack of pictures, my computer or WordPress is throwing a fit.
