I’m not sure if this is just me, but I feel like people are wayyy more afraid of things that are totally unreal. For example, it seems more common for someone to be afraid of the Gremlins or vampires or unfriendly werewolves than of wild possible occurrences like the never-ending chain of Ghostfaces in Scream or other film murderers. Please forgive my terrible references, I clearly don’t watch a lot of inherently scary movies. But you know what I find even scarier than the idea of being brutally sliced by a real live man in a mask?
We’re no strangers to technological advancements made to make our lives “easier” that are actually keeping tabs on us. So much so, that entire movies are dedicated to tipping us off that Big Brother is always watching. Nerve (2016) was a very creative and original film that put a twist on all of the social media games we play. But did anyone pick up on all of the main character’s preferences and interests just uploaded to the Nerve game from her social media when she decided to play? The whole idea of being monitored through social media and other technology isn’t new by any means, but seeing it in film to the creepy to a new level. I loved the visuals and the wild plot of the movie but by the end I was kind of shook at how realistic the idea actually was. Random people putting in and taking money out of our bank accounts and assigning us challenges based on our personal information don’t seem too far off and that terrifies me.
Now they’re coming out with a new sci-fi technology type movie: The Circle. Based on a novel (hopefully I’ll get around to reading it before the movie comes out but no promises!), The Circle looks into a technology and social media company and its social experiment lacking personal privacy which become more and more concerning as the film progresses. Maybe it’s because the company in the movie seems like Google on steroids but I remain convinced that Dave Eggers is on to something. April 28th is quickly approaching and I’ll definitely be front and center to see the next imagined technologically invaded future.
Vampires (who aren’t Stefan or Damon or any of the Cullens)? A bit unnerving. Werewolves not featured in Twilight or Teen Wolf? Slightly alarming. Total invasion of personal privacy tied to our futures? Horrifying. What are you afraid of?
