As I write this, I sit by a half empty box of tissues with a headache, but it’s just a reminder that life keeps moving no matter what. Fourth quarter is almost here along with all of our lovely finals, AP exams, and the dreaded SAT. Now more than ever we have to kick it into high gear with study sessions, prep work, and more. How do we do this? Focus. Here are a couple tips on focusing during finals season and getting the most out of your study sesh:
Shut Off Social Media
“But what about my snapchat streaks???” Don’t worry, I would never suggest letting go of your 349th day streak with your bestie, but it can get a little distracting. My suggestion: log into your social media early in the morning if you feel like you have to check in (and keep going towards the cool 100 day mark with your crush) but log out (of ALL platforms) as soon as you get home to start homework and studying. Leave yourself logged out the whole night. This way you can keep your streaks, and check on what’s trending, but you’ll be focused when you get down to business. It’s totally easy to get lost for hours on Twitter, or Instagram, or Snapchat, but you have work to do.
Make a Schedule
It pays off to have a plan. Scheduling an amount of time on certain days weekly is a great practice in keeping up with your goals for good grades on your exams/ in whatever classes you’re focusing on. I use the bottom section of my planner to write my focus for the night. I even draw a sun or a moon to indicate whether I plan on going to bed early or late that night. This is a reminder that sleep is definitely important too!
Catch some Zzz’s
Speaking of sleep, I know a lot of us students are totally programmed to keep moving until we get our work done no matter what time, but after a while it catches up to us! Sometimes, getting an extra hour of sleep is a bit more valuable than one last look over the textbook before tomorrow’s test. After all, the last thing you want is to be sick this time of year. When your body realizes how much sleep you’ve missed over time, it may take a lot longer to get better and you’ll miss out on a lot more work time because you didn’t take care of yourself. Besides, who wants to be so tired that they fall asleep on the big test day?
Clear the Way
A clean study space is so important to stay focused. Even if your entire room is a mess, if you have a desk make sure there’s little to nothing on it so that you have plenty of space for your laptop, textbooks, or whatever else you need to get things done. If you don’t have space in your room, find another well lit location at your house or at a library where you know there are minimal distractions and you can get things done.
One Last Thing
I’m sure there’s actual research to explain why this works, but I’ve found it most efficient to study materials right before I go to bed. Your brain just absorbs much more of the information. I’ve woken up some mornings muttering the last bit of content I studied the night before. Weird, I know, but it definitely helps with retention.
