As you may have realized by now, I have a very diverse sense of style. My closet doesn’t scream “I’m obsessed with Pacsun”, or any other apparel store for that matter. My style varies from day to day: it just depends on how I feel and what I think is cute. If you’ve ever seen my Instagram story, you’ll notice that often I wear a nose ring but in my actual posts it’s nowhere to be found (spoiler alert: it’s fake!!). As much as I love wearing it, it just doesn’t feel like me all the time. Some people have their noses pierced because for them it’s a staple to their appearance, but for me, it’s little more than a fond accessory.
I’ve never been particularly fashion focused. Sure, people compliment me and tell me that I “can dress” but I don’t put too much effort into my outfits on the regular. What my viewers and readers generally see is what I consider dressing up; it’s me on a day that I intended to make a statement with my outfit, and the statements are most often different. On the average day, I’m pretty casual in a crop top with high-waisted jeans or leggings. I suppose this is some form of consistency but even these outfits have their nuances and aren’t enough to distinguish a specific appearance. Unlike most bloggers, fashion-related or not, I haven’t created a distinct aesthetic.
The idea of a captivating aesthetic has been a concern since I started Nia Shalise. I’ve actually been looking forward to addressing this for a while, but I wanted to establish myself as a writer first. I haven’t created an aesthetic because there isn’t a specific visual technique that can be used to encompass me. Of course, an aesthetic isn’t a big problem per-say, especially since fashion and visuals aren’t the main focus of my blog. But I’ve always been a little worried that because I don’t have an identifying look, people wouldn’t be attracted to my work. My worries deepened when research showed that consumers prefer seeing a clean distinct style on a public figure account.
After further observation, I’ve realized that this may not be too much of a concern at all. After all, I’m not the only one without a consistent look. Many of my friends enjoy a number of different styles as well, in fashion as well as music. Unlike when teens used to listen to a single genre of music, present day young adults tune in to several different genres spanning numerous topics. Millennials as a generation are developing a sense of diversity and straying from constancy. I don’t think it’s an intentional “beat the system” edgy statement. It’s moreso developed naturally as a result of destruction of stereotypes that we’ve worked as a generation to bring about. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being a millennial with an aesthetic. After all, I think it’s kinda cool and put together. It says, “look, this is exactly what I like and I’m gonna rock it all the time”. But I realized and came to terms with the fact that it isn’t me. I do want to find some kind of a balance, maintaining a somewhat visually cohesive space representative of my diverse interests, but I know it’ll take some practice. Regardless of my appearance, I hope you all enjoy keeping up with my blog.
