Current Night Routine

Life can throw a ton of curveballs at us but it’s important to maintain at least some form of a daily regimen to keep our skin healthy and our thoughts organized. This is my current skin care/ winding down night routine.

When I come home, I’ll deal with a number of different obligations so I’ll spare you the variable details and skip to my shower. I love love LOVE using a loofah as opposed to a rag because it easily exfoliates your skin without feeling like overkill for your daily routine. Because I’ve had skin issues in past, I tend to stick to the sensitive skin-friendly Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Wash but I’ll stray off to scented soaps every once in a while. If I feel like getting extra exfoliation in, I’ll use the Bath and Body Works Stress Relief Smoothing Body Scrub. The eucalyptus and spearmint smell amazing and the sudsy scrub consistency is really nice.

After my shower, I moisturize. I haven’t been the best at keeping up with it but using some kind of lotion or body butter after your shower is so important. Again I usually go for Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion Sheer Hydration and it honestly keeps your skin hydrated for so long. This year I started using Vitamin E oil on my stretch marks and scars and though it’s a very gradual process, it really does help to fade away marks. This one was I believe $3.99 from Trader Joe’s and it works just fine.

Next up is my face: I use the Clear Start Breakout Clearing Foaming Wash from Ulta as my nightly facial cleanser. I like using a cleanser at night because we just come in contact with so much dirt and oil throughout the day and washing your face prevents all the sediments from causing breakouts overnight. I don’t have too many thoughts about this cleanser but it definitely makes my skin feel clean. I use the cleanser with my Konjac sponge which is a gentle way to exfoliate your face daily. I absolutely love it: it’s like doing two things at once and skipping a mask scrub!

I use Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel after my cleanser and I love it because it feels like it’s hydrating your skin without getting greasy or oily afterwards.

 

Pro tip: if I want to wear lipstick the next day, I’ll generally make sure I drink a bunch of water before bed to hydrate my lips and prepare it for Vaseline. Wearing a thin coat of Vaseline on your lips overnight kinda separates any dead skin and makes it easy to scrub off with a toothbrush in the morning, leaving behind soft, glowy lips. This technique is a hit or miss because if you haven’t had enough water, you may take off too much skin in the morning. Staying hydrated for this is soooo important!

One last thing I’ve included in my facial regimen is castor oil. This year I started applying it to my eyelashes using a (clean) mascara wand overnight to help my eyelashes grow. I just apply it from the root to the tip- being very careful not to get it in my eye!- and wash it off gently in the morning. Within a couple of weeks, I actually noticed a difference not only in the length but the thickness of my lashes.

Right now my hair is in braids so I don’t do too much to my hair: I’ll use coconut oil to keep my roots moisturized, throw on a bonnet, and I’m all set!

 

Once I’m *finally* done with my skin care I’ll head back to my room to finish up some last minute work. If I’m going to have a really long night, I’ll grab a cup of coffee but I don’t really recommend it because it’ll keep you up way past when you finish your work. Recently while I work I’ve been listening to electronic music. I don’t like silence but having words in the music can get a little distracting. Spotify’s Brain Food playlist is the answer for me. If I’m not working on something for school, sometimes I’ll listen to my Jhene Aiko playlist. Her music is relaxing and I can still focus just enough on whatever I’m doing if I turn the volume down a bit. After I get through my work, I’ll hop in bed and scroll through Instagram and Twitter for a bit. I love keeping up with current events and what you guys are posting, etc.

 

My hands get really dry at my job so sometimes, especially days right after the weekend, I’ll put on some hand lotion and a pair of gloves last thing before I to go to bed. Right now I’m using L’Occitane’s Delightful Rose Hand Cream. It’s a little weird wearing gloves to bed but it’s so helpful in rehydrating my hands and making them softer.

 

And finally… eventually… it’s lights out for me!
