After much anticipation, Oakland singer Kehlani’s debut album was released on January 27th. Survivor of an early 2016 suicide attempt, the girl has heart and outstanding work ethic. Her fans, lovingly referred to as “Tsunami Mob”, have always admired her persistency and focus (myself included). She’s been grinding from the beginning to show emotional versatility in her pre-stated attempt to “change the way they looking at us women making music”. SweetSexySavage definitely delivers true to name.

Sweet- In My Feelings
At first glance, someone might mistake In My Feelings for a song about a complacent and weak mindset but I actually think the opposite. She shows that she knows she’s obsessing over some girl or guy who doesn’t give as much as she does BUT she sounds like she has one foot halfway out the door because “it won’t be for long, I ain’t having it”. Everyone relates to this feeling at some point and she paints the perfect picture of this uneven exchange, trading in a depressing beat for her signature pop sound paired with New Edition bars. Now we can contemplate our *questionable* relationship decisions to music without guaranteed tears. Thanks K 🙂
Sexy- CRZY
CRZY is by far my favorite song on this album. Of course it isn’t sexy in the traditional sense of being sexual but it goes further than that. Going “crazy” in Kehlani’s eyes is going HAM with ambition and I dig it. She sings about staying on her grind and it’s honestly a great look. She embodies a bad chick and demands respect as a female artist.
Savage- Do U Dirty
This is where it gets complicated. Originally I hated the song because it seemed like absolute abuse of emotional power. However, the album carries listeners through her love life and hardships for context to her actions. It’s not meant to be a bad influence but rather a learning experience about her personal life and the way things tend to go when you’re put through certain situations. At the end of the day, the song is still describing her emotionally abusing this specific person unprovoked. It seems that all he/she has done is expect to last because of her amazing qualities but because of her past she’s unable to comply. Even though I’m not too sold on the message, I think I just love that the song is real. She’s not afraid to show this side of her that we wouldn’t expect and I commend that.
Overall SweetSexySavage plays to our heartstrings and our spirits delivering talent. We’re all in awe at the tsunami waves she’s making in the music industry.
