Urban Outfitters (UO) comes out with some pretty creative stuff, no doubt about it. It tends to be on the pricey side but there’s nothing wrong with splurging every once in a while. However, my real issue lies not with their prices, but their use of inappropriate and offensive messages.
Just recently, I happened to Google the store to see what they were getting into these days. It just so happened that they were exposed for their use of the plus sized model, Barbie Ferreira. She is a size 14 while the store only carries up to a size 12. False advertising, no?
This is not the first negative run-in Urban Outfitters has had with the media. Over the years, Urban Outfitters has come under a lot of pressure for some questionable products they have released as well. In 2015, I wrote an essay about their controversial products and decidedly haven’t shopped there since. Let’s look back at some of their questionable decisions:
T-Shirt Controversy
Throughout the years, Urban Outfitters, a specialty retail store with headquarters in Philadelphia, has released products like T-shirts and lines of dishware with questionable messages and offensive statements. The released items have personally offended many people due to their personal relations to the negative events. Urban Outfitters has been involved in numerous controversies over the years due to several of their distasteful products. References to sensitive topics such as those where people are injured, as well as racist/sexist statements are not appropriate for public display through objects such as clothing because of the pain generated by these statements. In recent years, Urban Outfitters has released a Kent State University sweatshirt with a bloodstained appearance, a T-shirt reading “Eat Less”, and a line of shot glasses and coffee cups printed as prescription drug bottles (The Week Staff). Urban Outfitters has released items that can and have been perceived as offensive and should take their lines into consideration before releasing them to consumers.
In mid-2014, Urban Outfitters sold a vintage looking sweatshirt with red splatters across it, giving it a bloodstained look. The sweatshirt reads “Kent State University”. Between the vintage and bloodstained appearance of the sweatshirt, people are horrified to connect it to the Kent State University shooting. The shooting took place during the Vietnam War on May 4, 1970 at the university located in Kent, Ohio, causing at least 12 casualties in total, four being deaths. Students had been protesting the Vietnam War instigating the National Guard to release tear gas into the crowd of students. Some students picked up the tear gas cans and began throwing them back at the Guards. When no gas was left, the Guards began firing openly on the students. The four students killed were between the ages of 19 and 20, some actively participating in the protest and some simply bystanders or in the wrong place at the wrong time (Lily Rothman). Urban Outfitter’s allusion to this tragedy was utterly tactless and makes it seem as though they find the lives of those who were killed or injured trivial. Kent State University emailed a statement showing their personal disgust with “a company using our pain for their publicity and profit” (Kent State University). Those who are alumni of the school, lost loved ones during the event, or are/were part of the Kent State community take offense to the depiction of the horrible event as a fashion choice. The sweatshirt was pulled from the website according to a statement by Urban Outfitters at some point during the controversy. The bloody appearance of the sweatshirt adds to the myriad of references to violence in general in the world today and gives the message that it is acceptable.
A gray V-neck T-shirt released in 2010 reading “Eat Less” sparked controversy among bloggers, critics, and consumers who claimed that the T-shirt encouraged unhealthy eating habits (MYFOX New York Staff). The T-shirt makes reference to the behavior of those with anorexia nervosa. This mental illness usually displays an obsession with weight that results in extremely low body weight as well as a distorted self-image. “Eat Less” signifies the way anorexics eat less as a result of their obsession with being thin. The disorder, occurring mostly in females, is the most commonly fatal mental illness. It occurs commonly as well with up to 4.2% of women suffering from it at some point during their life. Not even half the people who suffer from anorexia receive proper attention and medical help (Eating Disorder Hope). A poll begun in 2010 on Huffington Post revealed 65.28% of pollers finding the shirt “Tasteless—this is promoting bad body image”(Huffington Post). The reference may be offensive to those with anorexia nervosa and their families. Even others are offended by the message; even without consideration of the eating disorder reference, the shirt is entirely rude because no one should be told to “Eat Less” by a T-shirt. The T-shirt was pulled from the website in 2011.
In 2013, Urban Outfitters released shot glasses, flasks, and beer mugs that looked like prescription pill bottles. The message sent by these objects was repulsive; by relating prescription drugs to alcohol, which has previously been glamorized by society, the retail company has glamorized prescription drugs. The state of Kentucky particularly has protested the sale of the cups, where prescription drugs are the leading cause of accidental death and over 1,000 overdose deaths occur per year (Kentucky’s Office of the Attorney General). Prescription drugs are the most abused substance by 14 year olds and older, following marijuana and alcohol. Due to society’s influence, boys are likely to abuse prescription drugs to get high, while girls abuse them to stay alert or lose weight (NIDA for Teens). These cups display prescription drugs as amusing and non-lethal, contributing to society’s nod of approval to prescription drug abuse. People with or who have known those who have/ had prescription drug abuse problems or suffered fatality from this abuse were definitely offended by the lack of graveness in the reference.
Numerous products released by Urban Outfitters have been perceived negatively. They have removed some of these products from their shelves after events due to the negative publicity and the perceivably disrespectful nature of the merchandise. As most of these products were removed from shelves and the website, evaluating the messages of the shirts before manufacturing would be in their best interest economically, to save money on producing items that would not be sold, as well as avoiding the deterioration of their reputation.
With each appalling controversy, numerous customers are insulted and boycott Urban Outfitters with support from their friends. Many are also disturbed by the store’s seemingly bad intentions in releasing these objects as a publicity stunt and have in return, also abandoned the store. The store has definitely provided a negative affect by glamorizing drug abuse, eating disorders, and violence. It is in the best interests of all, Urban Outfitters, and customers, especially the easily influenced adolescent fan base, that the store reviews their products as to not cause unwanted hurt feelings and dangerous influence. Some find that Urban Outfitters is not at all to blame for their shirts and if people do not like their messages, they can avoid shopping there; however, through the release of their shirts, people will still buy them and expose them to the susceptible minds of others by wearing them.
